DhumavatiA Voice in the Smoke

Dmitry is forty. An ordinary job, a flat of sixty-four square metres, evenings spent over Sanskrit dictionaries — and a voice. A woman’s voice: calm, wry, unhurried. He has heard it for years, and he calls her simply Ma.

One evening Ma says, ‘Get ready.’ — ‘For what?’ — ‘You will find out.’

So begins a path he never chose and would not now leave for anything: nights in a cemetery, cycles of practice, a broken mala and seven stranger beads, sixty-four sister yoginis — each with her own voice and her own temper — students who come to him and leave for themselves, mistakes paid for with oneself, and a silence in which the essential can at last be heard.

A novel about a Mother who does not comfort but teaches; about a fear that need not be conquered once you learn to see; and about a man who came to understand that being everywhere and nowhere is not a riddle but his true address.

About the author

Anatoly Romashkov

Anatoly Romashkov is a writer and the author of the Dhumavati series. He is drawn to what literature seldom lets in: living spiritual practice, without gloss and without cheap thrills — the path of a man who hears more than he is supposed to, and pays for it with himself.

He writes plainly and directly: about fear and silence, about a Mother who does not console but teaches, and about how an ordinary life of work, traffic and washing-up turns out to be part of a far larger path.

Dhumavati: A Voice in the Smoke is the first novel in the series, published in both English and Russian.
